Research Area C

 Innovative Diagnostics and Therapy

(Head: Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Johannes Ring, München)

Research area C is developing new and innovative concepts for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in the treatment and prevention of allergic diseases. This is because only early diagnosis can bring about more effective prevention programmes and better treatment options at a stage before chronic and permanent health damage develops in those affected. The aims of this working area are (1) the development of predictive tests to assess the allergy risk in childhood with the aid of new genetic allergy markers based on research into gene-environment interactions, (2) the development of new diagnostic approaches to measuring and quantifying subjective symptoms of allergy, itching, and (3) the development of tools that will enable potential allergy-inducing or allergy-protective surface structures of common allergens to be identified. These form the basis for the construction of hypoallergenic molecules which can in turn be used in a form of «tailor-made» immunotherapy.
